First time I have ever tried to capture an animal

Came home and this little chap was sitting in the garden looking at me, he sat there looking moody as cats do until I had rattled off 5 or so shots and then he ran off.

Good shot. :) I might crop off some of the left side so the subject isn't in the center of the frame.
 
Cute cat. I too would suggest cropping a bit off of the left side. I've found that when trying to capture an animal, a good rope is often very useful. I prefer the older, larger-diameter natural fiber ropes, not newer nylon ropes. Nylon is small in diameter, and very slippery, and causes rope burns.
