Five Minute Stranglehold

I recently started using my DSLR for the occasional YouTube video, but the DSLR camera has a 5 minute limit on taking video (sometimes 3:30, but it doesn't let me know that up front).

Needless to say, it's led to some pretty frustrating re-shoots and editing.

Can someone explain to me WHY there is a 5 minute limit? I know it has something to do with overheating, but there has to be a better solution for taking longer, uninterrupted shots.
