I'm a newbie to this site and am looking for information regarding what flash to buy for a Nikon D2X for telephoto, shooting multiframes per second, bird photography. Do I also need an auxillary power pack (which one)? I've heard of "telephoto flash" extenders? Are they helpful? Thanks very much.

The SB-800 does pretty much all that without getting into location kits.

And it will accept various external power packs from Quantum as an example. Makes recycling almost instantaneous. Use with care as you can overheat your flash with them.

The Nikon SB-800 is a fantastic and versatile flash, although I wonder how far away will you be taking pictures? Its guide number of 39/100 means it's not as powerfull as some other flashes out there. At full power without an external powerback it takes 4 seconds to recharge.

Garbz,

Mostly eagle shots, in flight, say twenty to forty yards away. The camera takes 7 frames per second and I'd like the flash to recharge just as fast.

Anybody with thoughts about a telephoto flash extender (I'm sorry I don't know the correct name for it?
