This was an experiment in macro photography. Of course, since I don't have a macro lens I took the cheap and not too easy way out and just flipped my lens around. Question: does the small DOF help or hurt this image?

No. It does not.
If anything, then it makes the whole picture "mysterious" which is something that I think goes very well with the light and the colours that we see here.

Macro of this kind, i.e. this very close, is fun - and to work with the reversed lens is even more fun ... there should still be a thread around of the fly I once photographed in this manner, hang on ... here_it_is - you might like it?
