Flying with a tripod

I will be doing some domestic and international travel this year. I have an expensive Gitzo carbon fiber tripod that I want to bring with me. It the old days I would carry it on with me but I think that is not permitted today. I always carry my camera bag on but wonder what I should do with my tripod.

Put it in your checked luggage, that's where mine always goes.

I have carried a CF tripod on international and domestic flights recently... you shouldn't have any problems! They are allowed!

If you are allowed to bring hockey sticks why not a tripod?

I remove the head from my tripod and put it in my carry on. Never had a problem.
