So I rented the big 300 2.8 and was blown away! Too bad it's far beyond my reach price wise.

Haha yeah it ruined me. Things were still dark/noisy but much better shooting at 2.8.

I used a monopod. The weight wasn't bad. I would want to hand hold for 10 minutes while waiting for a bird to move, but it was very manageable.

Do what I did, shop around for an old Tamron SP 300 2.8 or a Sigma. The Tamron is loaded with ca but a quick profile build in LR and you can do away with it on import. I spent $1200 on that instead of spending big money on a Nikon. From there I saved a few dollars then went to a Sigma 120-300.

with the 2.8 you can keep shooting when the fog rolls in lol
