I saw several of these modular trucks in Laos. A basic frame and steering assembly with a motor that can be mounted in a variety of places. Loud, slow but functional.

It would be safer just to take the Hilux in the back

That actually looks like a really clever and practical idea. It appears to be a very well made chassis, and while I'm sure it's 0-60 time would make even James May roll his eyes, I'm guessing that it will go over most anything.
 
Laos has an execrable road system and traffic regulation is essentially non-existent outside of Vientiane or Luang Prabang. These trucks seems like they are used only for heavy, short-distance transport of just about anything/anywhere.
