2 questions. Is that hole really big or just a small little one? That doesn't cause much light to escape

And how pain in the ass are the rods to assemble?

I would describe the hole as dime to nickel size. It doesn't let out a lot of light I would think. And if it does, I'm sure it's not enough to matter. A small piece of gafers tape would stop that problem. Total set up time of the softbox would take 2-3 minutes at most once you get the hang of it.
