Hey, I was wondering if anyone can help me out with what gear is absolute needed on the trip and what indoor need so much. I will list what I own it's not much but it will do. As well if you think I should get something let me know.

D7000
40mm lens
18-300mm lens
2x tripod
2x battery
lowepro bag
halo ring light
polarizer
plastic camera bag cover thing
2x water resistant cover for the bag just in case.
Charger

Anything else? That enough battery?
i will only be taking my one tripod.

Lots of SD cards !!!
You need to get a Nikkor 500mm f/4.

Ah, yes. You probably get some moisture down there, so those bags would be handy.

I just got back from a couple weeks there. What gear you need depends largely on where you're going and what you want to shoot. If you'll be in the rainforest taking wildlife photos, there is never enough light and the animals are always too far away, so practice hand holding at slower shutter speeds and maybe get a monopod. You won't want to hike with a tripod. I really wish I had taken a monopod with me.

Unfortunately I cant afford the 500mm lens. I have lots of sd cards ready I'm just stockpiling haha. I know I am going to hate carrying around a tripod. I plan to take really slow shutter speeds of water and sunsets which I would need my tripod for anyways. I will be going to cloud forest reserve, Monteverde, San Antonia and a few other places as well as landing in San Jose. I am going with the group G adventures and am really hoping there is even enough time for photography.

When are you going? It’s the dry season now, but it will start raining every day in a few months. I was in northern Panama, close to Costa Rica, last year in the rainforest. I took two bodies (D300 and D7000) 70-300 f4.5-5.6, 80-400 f4.5-5.6, 60mm micro, 35mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.2 Als, plastic bags, rubber bands, band aids/first aid kit, nylon cord, two tarps, mosquito net, Lowepro camera bag that doubles as a float across a big stream, tripod that also doubled as part of a tent, sb700, 6 32gb cards, battery grips, six camera batteries, lots of AA batteries, and food/snacks. Oh, and lots of socks, good shoes, etc. FLASHLIGHT!!

You're not dealing with a great amount of gear to start with, I would just take it all.

Agreed, I monopod will come in handy walking around with your tour group and it's easier to hike with as well. My monopod came with a small sling so I sling it on my shoulder when not in use. It doesn't take much to create a sling for your tripod or monopod either.

I think I am going to look into a monopod now that I think about it, my tripod comes with a bag/sling. I am going on Feb15 for 10 days. At the moment I only have 2 batteries but from what I herd they have our plugs in the hotels and I can charge each night. I believe I have 4 SD cards 3 16gb and 1 32gb. Which lowe pro do you have that is completely waterproof. I have the bright orange one I was thinking of getting a dry bag for it. I also will be taking my netting and flashlights AA batteries thank you for the reminder I knew I forgot something. I have water runing shoes and hiking boots. Soon ready to go.

I'd take it all, except what's the purpose of bringing two tripods? Do they each serve a different purpose? otherwise I would just take the better one.

I wouldn't worry about taking batteries unless you expect to do a ton of camping or something. I remember electricity being pretty much everywhere I went down there.

Sounds good. Oh oops I meant to put this is what I own which of it should I bring.

oh jeez, i must have been tired when I was on here last. I think I just told you not to bring batteries  what I meant is that 2 should be plenty!

Where are you going? In Corcovado/Osa Penninsula we had monkeys on our rooftop. And they get pretty close. If you go there definitely go on the bug lady night tour. A macro lens would be nice as there are some cool insects, spiders, tree frogs, etc.

The only part of Costa Rica I have been to was Gulfito, but they did have 60 Hz 110-120 volt electricity. I have the Lowepro pro trekker 600 AW. I could almost use it as a boat. They do not claim 100% waterproof, but my stuff stayed dry. I did not have access to electricity most of the time, so I needed to carry more batteries; the good thing was they gave around 1000 shots before needing replacing.
