Gimp 2.8 is comming with Single window and Gegl

The trouble is GIMP still can't handle 16 bit images.

RAW captures are 16 bit images, after conversion.

The one you posted doesn't have any GIMP 2.8 info and they guy needs to do some maintanence on his site there.
 
It will always be 8 bits if you save as jpg...that is so for photoshop...biút if you save as tiff it will be 16 bits in time...

Yep JPEG is 8-bit color depth only. So most prints and all web posted images are 8-bit.

There are advantages to doing your editing in 16-bit though and until GIMP can handle 16-bit depth images that advantage is lost on GIMP users.

It's free, so no one should expect it to have the same capabilities as Photoshop.
