I know what you mean about the sunlight, Maybe it's just me, and my love for B&W portraits, But maybe you can emphasise the light in the colour shot, and if it means anything, maybe crop the top 1/5th of the image at the same ratio which should close in the shot closer to her head and elbow

EDIT: On second thoughts, You lose the window and I kinda like the tree and window so ignore me

I think you're right about a crop - perhaps needs to lose some of the top of the image? I was at quite a low angle, and included a bit too much window.

Very nice; might be worth trying to pull some detail out of the hair; not much, but just enough to avoid it being an almost solid, black mass.

Yes, good point, I tried that, but I was using my old spare body (Fuji X-E2) to save weight on a day trip, and it's single card slot and I was shooting jpeg - so her hair looks to be a black hole.

.... and this was the train we were on - 3rd Class No AC as I wanted open windows to take photos, and the windows were shuttered so light was very directional. (and we got covered in dust and diesel soot ).
