Good Economical Studio Kit Or Equipment

Hi there and I'm new to the forums. I'm also new to photography at least at the level that I'm getting into. Finding a love for taking pictures of children in creative ways, I've expanded my limited photography equipment to a wide variety of props, muslims, and I even bought myself a new Canon 60D of which I have only two lenses for so far. Ef 50mm f1.8II and an EF-S 18-135 IS.

What I would like to know is this! I have dedicated a small room in my home to become a studio, and I require a backdrop stand and some lighting. I've been searching all over eBay and have found loads of cheap stuff but I'm affraid that it will be just that, "GARBAGE"

Does anyone have any recommendations for affordable lighting or kits and what I should possible look at getting. I don't have a big budget at this time maybe $500-$600 . I will mainly be doing portraits.
