I am seeing good prices on "imported" lenses, which from what I've been reading seems to translate to grey market I believe.
Is it as important to avoid the lenses as it is cameras where it comes to "imported" stuff?

Not really. If you are talking about the cheaper lenses especially those with lesser features such as no focus motor, no IS/VR etc., it may make sense as these are less prone to breaking down due to the simpler design. I have two Nikon lenses both priced at a little of $100 both of which are grey market versions. Since they both do not have VR and don't have a focus motor, I am convinced that these lenses won't breakdown easily and still has a one year warranty. In my case I have just foregone the 5-year Nikon warranty. Howeverm if I were to purchase a much more expensive lens say a 70-300mm AF-S VR, then I would think otherwise.
