headshot help!

i've been asked to shoot "emergency headshots" for a friends friend. emergency as in we need to shoot them this or next week. i told her i'd do it, but i'm not sure if we should shoot indoors (i have a studio) or if an outdoor location would be better.


can anyone give me tips on how to take a great headshot? she is auditioning for an off-broadway show. i do shoot mostly portraits, but headshots are new for me to shoot, so any help at all is appreciated. thanks!

Just google headshots and you will get your answer.

There was a thread recently on the subject but I'm too lazy to go look for it right now. Sorry.

Very flat lighting
No hair in eyes
No jewelery
Lens level ( no up tilt or down tilt)
Pose straight ahead No turn or tilt of head
Bland background

Keep it sharp. F8 ~ 12

Print at 9x12 unless told otherwise.

This is not a portrait, this is so they can see a look.

As mentioned... flat lighting on a white background, head just a little to the left or right of the camera, no more than 20-40 degrees. No shoulders, neck up only.

Flat lighting = light coming from a closely positioned softbox above and in front of the subject at a 30 degree angle from nose to softbox center.
