Hello from DC. New to Photography

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to photography and would like to move up from a Sony point and shoot that I am using. I'm not sure if this the correct place to post but first I need to purchase a SLR camera but I'm not sure were to start.

I want to start with portraits. I will be practicing by taking pics of my 2 year daughter for starts.

I had a friend recommend the Rebel T1i. I've seen some of the pics he has taken of his toddler and they look great. Any help on where to start or what type of camera I should looking for would be great. Thanks

I forgot to add some other things I am looking for in the camera.

The most important thing is image quality.

At least 12 mega pixels.

LCD would be nice but not a must.

Don't care about video on this camera.
