Ok, hello everyone. I am going to Utah in a few weeks and am thinking about adding another tool to my lens tool bag. Here is what I currently have

Nikon D810
14-24mm Nikon
35mm prime Nikon
50mm prime Nikon
70-300mm Nikon
18-55mm Nikon (kit lens)

I’m debating between the 24-120mm or the 28-300mm. I tend to shoot a variety of stuff so I don’t focus on one category. For example I was just in Cheyenne, Wy and was shooting Rodeo and then was shooting the Thunderbirds the next day. I also enjoy landscape and Milky Way pics. I have wanted to get more into headshots but it’s not a priority. I liked both lenses when I was messing with them at Best Buy.

Any thoughts on which would suit me better. Other suggestions on different lens is always welcome. Thanks

Having used a 18-140 DX lens, I do LIKE the flexibility of the wide range GP lens.
But when the light level drops, that f/3.5-5.6 lens does not handle the lower light level as well as a faster lens. The light transmission loss of the super-zooms 18-140 and 28-300 is about 1/2 stop, vs 1/4 stop for the 24-120 f/4 zoom.
I ended up getting a 70-200 f/4 lens, because the 18-140 f/3.5-5.6 was just toooo slow for high school night sports under lights.
The 24-120 f/4 was also a consideration.

If you want a 1-lens GP lens, then the 28-300 works.
If you want a GP lens as part of a 2 lens kit, then the 24-120 + 70-300 works.
If light level is a factor, then 24-120 is better in lower light.

The 24-70 f/2.8 is a great lens, but it really needs a longer companion. The standard companion lens is the 70-200 f/2.8. Your 70-300 would substitute, but is not at the same IQ level as the 70-200.
The 24-70 is also the heaviest lens of the 3 by a significant amount. So how much would the TOTAL camera + lenses weigh?

There is another consideration, that I did not recognize and appreciate till this past year. This is where multiple lenses overlap/transition.
Example if you have a 24-70 and 70-300, the transition point is 70mm. But if you are shooting something and going from 50-110mm, you would be switching back and forth between the two lenses, or just shooting with the shorter 24-70. Whereas with the 24-120 or 28-300, it is within the zoom range of the lens, so no switching of lenses, just turn the zoom ring.

I would personally go with the 24-120 over the 28-300.

I'd go 24-120. It's probably not fair to comment, I do have the 24-120 and never used the 28-300. The 24-120 is good (probably not fantastic when compared with more premium optics), most reviews say the 28-300 is only ok. You've got one of the best dslrs ever made, if it were me I'd try out the best possible lenses on board
