I want to get a lens/flash to shoot indoors.

How does a EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM w/ Speedlite 430EX sound?(or should I spend the extra money on a 580EX II?)
I've seen a lot of people talk about Tamron's 17-50 F/2.8..
I think this is a good focal length??
If I got things right, both are for a cropped sensor.
I don't see myself upgrading to a full sensor body any time soon, but you never know..

Are there any "L" lenses I should be looking into.

Budget wise, I'm saving money and will probably have around a grand by Feb.. I'd rather save a month or two longer and get something good,, so let's say there is no budget.

Any help would be wonderful!

Equipment without knowledge is not going to help you may pictures any nicer.

As far as hardware specific info, there are many others here way more Canon savvy than I am, so I will leave that part if it to them.

Sounds great. That lens gets plenty of high praise from people who own it. Many say that it's optically L quality...but maybe not L build quality.
The 430EX is a good flash, the 580EX is better but more expensive.

I have the Tamron 17-50 F2.8, I don't think it's as good as the 17-55 Canon, but it's less than half the price. Also consider the 18-50 F2.8 from Sigma.

Canon doesn't make EF-S lenses with the L designation.

If you want L, there is the 16-35 F2.8 L and the 17-40 F4 L.

I would say to go for the 50mm f1.4L if you really want an inside lens, and have a budget that isn't gonna prohibit you.
It's a full frame lens, so it will work on both your current camera, any film EF mount cameras, and in the future maybe a full frame sensor camera.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link Jerry,
I've been reading a ton from over there.

After purchasing my 50/1.8... I really expected to be able to shoot in the dark... NOT!
And the focal plane(wide open) is about an inch(imo:p), too small.
ANd I don't like the 50mm inside(imo).. it's too close.

I've been reading a lot about the 16-35 F2.8 L ;)

And my most resent desire is the 70-200 F2.8 L IS
