Here ye, here ye!

How would I setup my camera to take one of those pictures you see of the stars streaking across the sky?

1) I know you have to mount the camera to a tripod(duh.)

2) I know you slow the shutter speed down to like 30 minutes or something to that effect...

but what I dont know is can I create this shot in my backyard with city lights all around. I dont want to have to go out into the country to take a clear shot.

any suggestions?

If you want the sharpest picture possible you definately need to get away from the light pollution.

Definately should have a calm evening.
