I just bought the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens for the Nikon D40. When trying to use the aperture ring the camera tells me:
"Lock lens aperture ring at minimum aperture (largets f/-number)."

I looked in the manual and it says the same thing. Anyone know if there's a way to use the aperture ring on the lens as opposed to the one in the camera? And if not, does anyone know why?

You can't use the aperture ring like on the manual bodies and the N2020, N8008's and bodies like that. I don't know why, but it's not that big of a deal anyway. The dials are much better.

The problem is the cameras don't differentiate between the electronic and mechanical controls. If the lens has a chip it will want to control it electronically. As far as I know there is no way to override this. Lenses without a chip (lenses without D or G designators) will require you to specify to the camera what lens is mounted so that it can metre correctly, and then use the aperture ring.
