I am reasonably new to photography. I have a Canon EOS 400d, which until recently have pretty much been using it in full auto, and am trying to come to grips with the manual settings. I am sure this forum contains a wealth of knowledge, to help me on my way, and wish to thank you all in advance.

Nothing wrong with the auto settings... look inside the viewfinder at what f-stop and shutter the camera selects to give you an idea of where to start for any photo..
