I'm a total newb when it comes to this stuff since I only got my first DSLR about two months ago.

I have a Canon T1i with the kit lens, a 50mm 1.8 and the 70-300mm zoom that's not the fancy shmancy one (someday!) with image stabilization.

My initial practicing has mainly been with nature shots of flowers, trees, and things but I want to start shooting people and events since I'm an actress as well and I'd love to help my friends get affordable (aka FREE) headshots as I learn.

Welcome to the forum, I picked up a lot of experience shooting events simply by offering my services from a volunteering perspective including: pets up for adoption, farmers markets, jewelry/craft fairs and community and college theatre. Nine times out of ten if you contact the organizer of your favorite local event asking if they could use free photo services they will jump at the chance.
