I thought at first there was some motion blur, but now it occurs to me that there really isn't? Is that right? Even while being stock-still it seems like it's rushing out of the frame at the viewer. Was that the intent?

It wasn't the intent, but I see what you mean. I think what you're seeing is just the way the light interacts with the walls of the cells. I really need to do some of these in color ... it looks pretty cool.
