The best raw editing software is sadly Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. Unfortunately they are also a filthy monopoly and exploit their unique position by asking you a monthly charge and entering you into their database.

Theres many lesser alternatives which can still yield good results.

There are at least two free ones, darktable and gimp.

Most companies give you a raw editor with your camera anyway, you can even just download them from the internet. The Nikon one is pretty good, though of course the possibilities are extremely restricted, compared to Photoshop and Lightroom.

I use a standalone Adobe Photoshop Elements 18, you can buy this on Amazon or eBay for about 50£ no subscription.....

UFRaw - Home

UFRaw has not been updated for several years (since 2015). It will not cope with Raw files from any modern camera, unfortunately. When UFRaw was current, it was excellent - giving a choice of demosaicing algorithms, extensive lens correction options - but, alas, not any more.

My favorite open source are DigiKam and darktable.
Otherwise, Lightroom is my primary.
I have tried most of the others...
Note: I emphasize organizing and meta data over editing.

What kind of camera do you have? Camera manufacturers usually provide basic editing software for their cameras RAW files. Nikon has View NX-i which while rather slow gives good control over exposure, sharpening and white balance and will let you convert your files to several other formats.

Actually not true. There are some excellent alternatives to Lightroom/PS like Capture One, DXO, Irident Developer.

unfortunately, Adobe's marketing department has managed to get people to confuse best selling with best.

Affinity Photo is a good Photoshop alternative. While it isn't "free" software... it's pretty cheap (I think it's $50). I bought it because Apple featured it on an iPad keynote a few years ago and I was really impressed. It was also (at least at that time) the ONLY application I could find that could natively open camera RAW files on an iPad (everyone else wanted images as JPEG or something else).

After buying it and using it (because I also have a Photoshop/Lightroom CC subscription), I realized Affinity Photo was remarkably similar to Photoshop ... but made lots of little improvements. It was "as if" people who used to work for Adobe broke away and wrote it (I have no idea how it came to be ... but it is remarkably similar ... including the ability to open .psd files!)

But I only occasionally use Photoshop or Photoshop-like editing tools. Most of the time I'm using Lightroom. I especially like the digital asset management (DAM) capabilities of Lightroom.

But there is more to consider. Like it or not (because I don't like it), Adobe is the 800 lb gorilla of the photo software world. There are loads of 3rd party products that have Photoshop or Lightroom plug-ins... but not for other photo editing software. You certainly can save money by using alternatives ... but you wont have as much broad support.
