How To Explain SLR Advantage to Non-Photographer?

A 1mm-20mm lens is a 20x zoom... I just explain it to them that way. Tell him to come back when his little lens and sensor hit puberty.

No a 20x zoom has a 35mm equivalent of 560mm
What do you mean No? He is right, 10-40mm is a 4x zoom. P&S's normally start at a bunch of different focal lengths, but all somewhat near each other: 28mm, 27mm, 31mm etc...

Example:
'Super Zoom' Camera Group Test (Q1 2009) Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

Checkout the different zooms. Its a ratio between the long and short focal lengths of the zoom ability.

Canon SX 10 IS 28-560mm
(20x)

Olympus SP-565 26-520mm
(20x)

Same 20x zoom, but different focal lengths.
560 / 28 = 20
520 / 26 = 20
