I'm trying to stop a 300m f2.8L lens from slowly swinging left to right. It's not much, but its enough that my center focal point can drift off the subject -especially when the subject is over 40m away and sprinting straight at me (track & field).

I need to develop a technique to hold a steady aim -any ideas?

I've got the lens mounted to a sturdy monopod.

It's as if my left and right hands are fighting each other and also my body keeps wanting to shift my weight from left to right.

Practice more with the monopod.

Is your monopod designed to support twice the weight of your gear?

Is the monopod attached to the tripod socket on the lens and not the camera?
With the camera strap around the back of your neck you can tighten up the strap with a hand on either side of the camera providing a bracing effect of the camera.

I hold the back of the camera with my right hand ready to shoot and left hand is at the end of the 300F2.8 easy it's not rocket science
