Hey guys i've been asked to come and attend an event here at my university which is going to be a late night snowball fight and take some action shots. I thought this sounded like a great idea to get some neat shots in but I am having some difficultly taking practice shots, everything is blurred or blown out. As far as equipment that I have
-sony a300
-50mm 1.8
-18-70mm 3.5-5.6 (kit)
-75-300mm 4.5-5.6
-sony hvl-f42am flash

What kinds of settings would you guys recommend to help freeze the action but not blow the picture out with the snow?

The right ones?

You can use the duration of the flash to stop motion. At full power the flash duration is about 1/1000 of a second. The flash users manual will have specifics on flash duration at lower power settings. The lower the power setting the shorter the flash duration.

Make sure the flash is synced to the rear (second) shutter curtain.

Control the flash exposure with the lens aperture. Don't exceed the a300's x-sync shutter speed. When using strobed (flash) light shutter speed controls the ambient light exposure.
