I feel awkward taking pictures of strangers

I feel very awkward and wrong taking pictures of strangers at the motorbike track. When they are riding it doesn't bother me but when they are waiting to go onto the track or in the pits.. If I don't ask to take their photo I feel like a weirdo taking the pictures. I don't want them to get upset.. I don't want them thinking I'm odd. I don't want to make them uncomfortable.

I'm finding it hard to get past the fear of what others think.

Chances are, they're used to it. I belong to a group which restores and displays old farm and agricultural equipment. The main item for which I am responsible is a 1912 Sawyer-Massey steam traction engine which attracts a lot of attention. I would guess that on an average show day, I'm probably photographed 100+ times. If you feel uncomfortable, don't take the shot, but I would say for occasions as you've described, there's no need to feel uncomfortable.
