I am getting the Nikon D40 or D60 soon and I was going to get the stock Nikon 18-55 lens and the Sigma 70-300 Macro lens for it. I figured this would give me a pretty good focal range. My problem is that I was looking into getting Cokin filters for the lenses and they have different filter sizes. So, I figured 'no problem, Ill just use a step up ring.' (the nikon is 52mm and the sigma is 58) With the Cokin filters, though, they need their own adapter ring to hold the 'filter-holder'. Will the cokin adapter go into the step up ring so I can use the 58mm filters on the 52mm lens?

Thanks in advance.

I may sound stupid, as I don't really know what cokin filters are expect a brand of regular optical filters.

Why do you need to use Cokin?

If they're that specialised, why are you only getting a D40 / D60 and then investing money into step-up rings just to be able to use filters?

Why don't you just get 2 filters, each of the corresponding size of your lenses.

I.e.

Get a 52mm filter and a 58mm filter.

Is there something more to this?

cokin filters use a drop in set up so they don;t use the thread, the holder does.

there are other filters out there that do fit into the threads directly , why not check them out along with the step up rings

you could fit the cokin filter holder into a step up ring, then you will need a step down to fit the smaller lens

The way I was thinking it, was to get a 58mm adapter for the holder to fit the sigma directly, then use the step up ring for the Nikon. I dont see the need for a step down ring also, unless I am thinking wrong. I wanted Cokin because of all of the special effect lenses they offer. The radial zoom inparticular. If others offer special effects like this or others, it would be amazing to get more info on them.

The Cokin filter holders are reasonably priced, buy two and a 52 mm and 58 mm mounting rings. You can then leave them on the lenses and just slip in the filters as you need them. It is probably not a good idea to use step down rings for the wide angle zoom because this will place the holder further in front of the lens and lead to problems with vignetting at the wide angle setting. Cokin have three ranges of filter sizes (67 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm square if I remember correctly) you may need one of the larger ones to avoid vignetting anyway. Try them out on the wide angle and use the same size on the other zoom.

I cant figure out all of this with the Cokin website It tells no prices and is quite confusing to me. Is there somewhere else that sells Cokin products?

Cokin mounting rings (the ring that the filter holder pops onto) are really cheap, probably cheaper than a stepup ring. Just buy one in each size.

If I buy one in each size, and I only have one filter holder, it will fit onto both sizes of the adaptor rings?

I am just wondering, do you already have the Cokin filters? If not, may I ask what filters are you going to get for your camera? Are you planning to get more than just the ND, UV or CPL? Like the soft filter, color filter such as red for take B&W pictures. I learned from someone here before saying most of the filters now are able to replaced by the digital post processing.

I dont have any kind of major PP like PS or anything. I only have Photofiltre. And I am planning on getting the CPOL UV, ND, Radial Zoom, Split field +3, close up +3, and Mirage filters to start. As far as I know, the split field, and mirage effects cant be dont after the photo is taken. Not totally sure on that.
