Is it some strange european thing... like the crazy frog?... from what I can gather it was pretty popular in 2005 - but that's just going by their merchandise on another website.

The word is that it started in Japan (of course) with a bunch of people who just liked eggs - so they wrote a song.
It's grown from there and got a little popular in a fringe kind of way.
Love the song.
