I decided to get an external flash and bought a SB-600; What a difference!
As a newbie, I did not think an external flash would help as much but I am amazed; so that's my advice to all the other newbies thinking it's not really needed: don't think, buy one :)

When I get mine, I'm confident I'll agree with you.

I've asked for one for christmas - it's at the very top of my ever-growing list of "equipment I want, and by want I mean need". That, and an ND filter.

For those considering one, Ken Rockwell has some great info on both the 400 and 600.

Check out the image of grandma on the link for the 400. The built-in flash image reminds me of too many of my shots.

I need to contribute to his site. He's influenced a couple of my purchases that have really led to making me very happy.

I want a flash SO BAD, But my Money tree is dying!

I'm gonna quote Big Mike of recent here.......

IMO, if you are seriously interested in flash photography, forget the SB-400. Only slightly better than your on-board flash.

The SB-600 is a great flash and bang for the buck to boot.

Remember ... the best flash image is one that does not look like a flash was used.
