Photography is a visual art, so studying visual art guidelines will be a big help.

Composition is a big factor that makes a photograph, or any other visual art, pleasing to look at. Use of light, color, shape, form, line, balance, unity, and scale are also very important. Entire books have been written on visual art composition, like:
