i'm ready. :D

He looks like he's very focused on something, and thinking very hard hahaha.

Very nice pictures. But I see some gray color – sign of age. How old are you dog?

the finisher, you like that uh? lol

rosescope, forrest is almost 18 months old. i know!! he is young but he has had a little white since he was a pup, i think its a pigment thing, genetically.

eb thanks! :)

mysteryscribe thanks!! :D

i love animals as models because they dont need a wardrobe to take pictures. :D

no one is finding anything wrong with the shots?
does that mean they cant be any better?... i like them but...

i like the shots a real lot, but they are somewhat boring there isnt much action, this may just be me, but i like a model picture to show some kind of action.. This is my personal preferance..

okay let me look again.... I would have cropped 1 verticle too much unused space on the sides

number two is distracting to me because the animal is off to one side with that bar of black space ... balence it is all about balence..

three is nice if you do not intend to make a print. If you do it is out of proportion for any I have ever seen standard.

4 5 are two that I just cant find any fault with.

six has the same problem as three not a close to a standard size print but if you just planned to use them here or on email it is great

The last one is the man with the cigar rule of composition... It would be better veritcle EXCEPT The line for the blinds is important to the shot so it is the correct crop and orientation.

Is that better.... Im glad to see you arent just looking for attaboy comments.

yes! i really want to learn and improve. joining here has been a great learning experience and i hope it develops my eye... i will work on the ones you mentioned and i see your point about the size portioning. doing a 8x10 or 4x6 size would probably look better.

5 and 6 are my favs in this group an i really like 4 and 7 as the others [1,2,3] dont do anything for me and were my early shots of today and i had trouble cropping them, they just didnt give me the wow i was hoping for. #5 does that for me.

thanks everyone for the insight and lovely comments too! :D

ah but look again. A really good portrait of person or animal captures a bit of animation even though there is no movement.

3 just screams daddy im sorry.... or whatever emotion the viewer wants to give it. It is the wonderful thing about animals, the are expressive.

In my studio years and years ago I used to do animals a lot. (because nobody else in town wanted to do them I think)

To do a studio portrait I always wanted the animal looking at the camera. I would get the camera ready and focus on the animal, then shout sharply "dog" it was the only word that ever worked consistantly. ONly a few times but it always worked. It is the word a dog hears everyday around the house he or she learns that it is them you mean when you say dog.

Just a useless bit of information.

no, not at all. i use the word, puppy! :D

3 actually has cute written all over it but i knew it needed more and wasnt able to get it....BUT

i like them alot betta. :)

what do you think?

Now that you have already and for long nailed things like focus and aperture, and are working on composition along with our mysteryscribe here, I feel it might be time to work on your lighting, since on-camera flash isn't the best of lighting, I think, though I see why you need additional light sources for indoor photos of Forrest, him having large black parts in his fur. And another thing is background. Watch for what is coming into your frames as background, since - blurred as it may be - it is part of the frame and can easily become a quite distracting part.
