I bought a couple rolls of Ilford SFX 200 film. I know it's not true IR, but aren't there some certain steps to follow in order to get the infrared look? I could really use some help before I go out and shoot.

Yes. You will need infrared filter.

Or with this film very strong, 5x, red filter should give you IR effects.
Some films, like Rollei Retro 80S will start to go IR even with orange filter.
Don't forget to check how to focus your lenses with IR filter. It is not the same like with normal shooting. Infrared light focuses in different plane as visible light does. with manual focus lenses there is usually red mark on the DoF scale. Also your AF may not work with IR filter.
You may find some tutorials online like this one:

about shooting IR film.
Good luck !
