Hey everyone, I've got a photo essay to put together for a final in class and my original idea was to do a series on the desert (Mojave) landscape in infrared.

However, given that I've no hands-on experience with infrared film and this assignment is due as a presentation in a few weeks, my instructor suggested that I instead use Ilford SFX film with a dark red filter as that would produce a near-infrared effect.

With that said, I've done some research on Ilford SFX and know that I should probably go with a Hoya R72 infrared filter and compensate 5 stops.

Has anyone here shot any type of desert landscape with this type of film? What was your experience? Any tips on processing/printing?

Thanks!

I believe the only commercially availble infrared film right now is Rollei. You might be able to find some Kodak HIE on eBay.

An R72 filter is definitely the way to go. I've shot some SFX200, and while it's a nice film you won't get a strong infrared effect from it.

With Kodak HIE you could get a pronounced IR effect by only using a dark red
filter. That was one of the great things about that film. Sure wish Kodak would
bring it back.
