Input on edit's please

I was trying to make some snap shot photo's look more presentable. I have also been trying to figure out how playing with the curves effects my photo's(still don't feel like I understand it). Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. Feel free to play with the pics yourself if you like.

I think you did a great job with the first one, but the baby's skin seems a little blotchy, so you may want to soften it a bit.

The second one is tough with that shadow on his face. Your treatment didn't fix that - you could try using the Shadow/Highlight adjustment in Photoshop. I did just a quick fix.

Is this better? I wasn't sure how to soften (Still new to PS) so I just did a gausian blur.
