Interesting Shots of My Cat! (: C&C

Overread said:
1 Is actually rather interesting, especially since its a looking down at you shot. Generally the advice for animals (and many subjects) is to present a view that the average person does not always see; with animals this is often the eye level or looking up to angles, since we are more used to looking down upon animals.

For some reason the mixture of lighting, angle and personality of the cat (as well as the eyes looking up) has combined to give a shot that actually holds interest even though its a common viewing angle. I'd also say the cat looks a little lion like, a little more feral.

The legs is a bit of a shame with one "missing" from the main shot, but the shadow helps fill in that missing detail. I would, however, crop of a fair bit from the right side, the wall and door frame detract from the shot significantly.

I shall fix that tomorrow when I get on my computer! I really like #1 because of the way my cat is looking and how she's mid step. Thanks a lot! I'm really glad I joined this forum, all of you are great (:

When photographing pets or children indoors, with shafts of sunlight streaming in through the windows, it is vitually IMPOSSIBLE to get an easy-to-work-with image even in RAW Mode, unless there is some kind of fill light...the dynamic range of the scene is simply very extreme; the sunlight on light carpet...then the dark shadows....a guy or gal just simply has to use a reflector for fill, open more curtains, or use flash to create fill light.

Bounced flash + a high shutter speed like 1/180, 1/200, up to 1/250 if the camera will do it, then ISO values of 100 to 200, and smallish f/stops like f/13 in the summer time, perhaps as wide as f/8 in the winter time with weaker sun, and a half- to full-power flash bounced off the ceiling or a wall has been my approach for mixing window sunlight + indoor light. (Some of this depends too on the overall brightness outdoors, and the climate and the room/windows/ambient light level; different exposures could easily be called for in say sunny southern California versus more-gloomy Seattle. In a house with lots of BIG windows, the shadows might not be nearly as deep as in an older house that has smaller, more-normal sized windows.)

Thanks Derrel;

Yeah, I mean I didn't realize how harsh that lighting could be.. guess I just needed that trial and error :P
Also, I do have a Canon 420EX Speedlite (I think that's the name of it!), I coulda bounced that and probably been MUCH better off....haha ah well.
But yeah I do think that's a good point, just to use as much light as I can that could counteract at least most of those shadows. :P

Thanks again man!

She is very sexy lol
it is as if you are very particular that some part or other of her must be amputed in the images....
..and first image looks like a one legged something ;)

regards :D

WTF are you feeding him? He's HUGE! :lmao:

1 and 4 are great!
i'm do agree though about #1 needing a crop

I know! SHE weighs about double what SHE is supposed to! I spoil HER way too much...

But don't hate. It's all muscle. She could drop you. I promise...... (;

I really think #1 is the best of the bunch...fun...the cat looks 3-legged, but the shadow shows otherwise!

My vet has a 'shop' cat.... one that has free rein of the entire facility. He's missing his front left leg.

They named him Tripod! :lol:

This makes me laugh :D hehe.

PS, photo#1 is now cropped! (:

So you like the cropped version ?

Hmm, I will add that Orange Tabbys are commonly male ... so that may explain the assumption of "he".

And she's an Ocicat (I forget how to spell it), and she's kinda a dirty orange/light brown color, might be kinda hard to tell tho haha.
