I have one that has made a web on my deck rails on the house that I have to get some shots of. I have named it Fred and told the wife that she is to leave him alone, he has already got at least 1 fly so he's earning his keep.

@mitch, you are not far wrong. I think spiders must have a defence mechanism based on not moving when in danger. I tipped it out of the glass jar and it stayed imobile for about 4 or 5 shots, then scuttled off before I could get it to sign a model release form. .
