How do they differ?

There has to be some difference, or there would be patent wars, lol.

I am well aware of what they do, I want to know how they do it, and what makes one different than the other.

While we're at it, does either system have an inherent advantage or disadvantage?

I'm just curious about how it works - no need to get into a brand war.

Canon taught Nikon how to do it

Yes, but did they actually license it to Nikon, or is that just a rumor that Canon fanboys created?

Or did Nikon develop their version independently...?

I think they operate based on slightly different tech, which would explain why it was only Nikon going to sue Sigma for their OS system and not Canon (if canon owned the original rights they'd have had the legal right to sue).

While Canon introduced the first IS lens for 35 mm cameras, gyroscopic IS was invented before that. I have never been able to discover by whom though, or exactly when.
