I went to San Francisco last week and visted the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. Upon exiting the gift shop, we were greeted by this...

I had to be quick on the shutter - he took off after about 30-60 seconds. It was a strange, Zen-like experience to see him up that close.

Looks like he was expecting something.

Cool capture.

Ah, I used to live in San Francisco. Absolutely beautiful place.

Great surprise, great pics!

(could this be the famous 'Holiday Hawk'?)

Lucky one!
Nice!
Did you decide to let the flash fire or did the camera decide for you?
It was good that it fired (this is one of the rare moments where I like the use of on-camera flash) ... else you'd never have got the detail nor the highlights in his eyes.

LP - 98% lucky, 1.5% camera, 0.5% skill :)

pascal - LOL, he couldn't have been much closer unless he landed on my head...

corinna - i have an identically composed shot without the flash, too. i decided to try one with the flash because he was in the shadows and the background was so bright. I think this one turned out better than the other one.
