Hey guys, I was just wondering if you could tell me what kind of jobs are out there for a photographer, like there is wedding photography and forensic photography, and tell me the pros and cons if you will of working in photography. I looked around on the internet but found many different conflicting options. Any advice or tips you could give me would be great.

I was not sure if this is the right section for this, but if it is not could someone please move it?

Two main categories would be working for someone vs working for yourself (owning & running a business).

One of the things about photography, is that it doesn't strictly require any qualifications or certification. So someone could get all the education and certification available...they might still be competing for jobs with someone who has none of that.

For those who choose to go with running a business, that is often the part that makes or breaks them. Many good photographers have failed because they weren't good at the business side of things. And at the same time, many mediocre photographers thrive because they are very good at the business side. (And that's certainly true in many industries).

Few staff jobs remain for photographers.

A Chicago newspaper recently laid off their entire photography department and will rely on freelancers and amateurs.
Basically, your only option is to work as a self-employed photographer be it retail, commercial, or editorial work.

You basically have the option of being self-employed and working in a really saturated market. It can be done if you are good, and can run a business properly. There are many different possibilities here, but Wedding photography is obviously the most common. As for anything, learn all you can, spend a couple of years assisting the type of photographer you want to be, and working hard. It's not that hard to get into, but it requires a lot of work to be successful.

Commercial/editorial work requires a lifetime of work. I know a few Brooks graduates who gave up after their umpteenth unpaid assistant position and started shooting weddings. It's not easy to get into.

What about war photographer

I wouldn't recommend it.. if you haven't been in one, you don't understand one and it isn't worth a photo. Some might argue that ... but again, if you haven't done it... *shrugs*

Stick with sports, wildlife, weddings and flowers... nice stuff.

Stick with photographing weddings? I thought that was war photography.

Photography is mostly a creative job, and there are few jobs in any creative industry. I have my own business focusing on weddings. I love it. The availability of jobs depends on the region. There are few photography jobs in Wisconsin, and the ones that are hiring are demanding several years of experience in very specific fields, like catalog shooting. Nobody is really looking for a general photographer. You could work at a paper, but those jobs suck; trust me. The best way to do it is to become an assistant or get a degree and do an internship. It's hard breaking in on your own.
