THAT is the way AF and AF-D lenses are supposed to be used on most newer Nikon bodies: set the lens to f/22 and LOCK it there with the little button lock deal. Then, adjust the aperture on the body, using the front control wheel. The error is perfectly normal.

FIFY. Some lenses go down to f/32.
