if you take a photo with the lens off you should at least have a whitish square image ???

Yeah when i take the lens off, and look through the viewfinder its white.

Okay, so take an image with the lens off... and can you look through the lens alone ?? (grasping at straws here)

Even with the lens off there is a black shutter covering something which is not enabling me to see the image im taking and yes i can see through the lens.

Mine looks like that but with a black shutter covering it

That is normal, what you are seeing is the mirror that directs the "image" to the viewfinder.

When you take a picture it flips out of the way...

This seems to be blocking the live view then, it's weird that is blocking my images ahh i really can't get my head round it.

Can't tell if the "white" is a reflection or what...

This is a 100% crop of my E-510 shutter.

Just had a thought. When shooting are you half pressing, wait for auto focus beep and full press ?
