I have a sony a200 that came with a 17-80 mm lens. I was curious if kit lenses are lesser of a quality than that of a lens that like a minolta of the same focal length. Is the lens they put with camera just a lens or are they same quality lenses that you would buy in a store . Just curious.

typically kit lens are of lesser quality because they are a mass produced product... think about a car stereo... your car comes equipped with one, it plays music, has a few bells and whistles.. does what you need... BUT if you spend a few extra dollars, you can get one that does everything you want, but at a better quality...

Cool. That settles that question for me. Thank You

I saw some pictures on the weekend taken with a A100 with the kit lens. Very bad chromatic aberrations. Not sure if Sony updated the kit lens or not for the 200. Reviews say that the camera performs well in regards to this, Im not convinced.
