Hey:

New one here, this may be a laughing matter to you old hands. I bought a Canon T3 ll00D camera. I know it came with an 18-55 lens, which is very good. Now, I bought a Canon 30D EOS, and they both will exchange lens. I have some lens marked EF only, and some EF-S, but they are exchanging with no problem. I was under the impression that only EF lens fit the "larger" cameras, and the EF-S were only for the smaller ones, like the T3.

So, my question us: Please give me some input on this. Right now, I have a EF-S mounted on my 30D, and a EF lens mounted on my T3. Am I missing something here?

Thanks and all the best,

Casper aka Bob

Ef and efs lenses will fit both your Canon cameras. Fullframe Canon only accept ef lenses. Efs are designed only for crop sensor cameras

Some of Canon's EF camera bodies that EF-S lenses can not be mounted on do not have a full frame image sensor.
Those EF cameras typically have the APS-H 1.3x crop image sensor in them.

Canon EF-S lens mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canon designers have taken steps to ensure it is physically impossible to mount EF-S lenses on EF-only cameras. This is because the increased proximity of the lens to the sensor means that on full-frame sensor or 35mm film EF cameras the lens itself would obstruct the mirror's movement and cause damage to the lens and/or camera. While it is possible to modify the lens such that the physical obstruction is removed, allowing for mounting to EF mount cameras, the rear of the lens would still obstruct the mirror.

The cameras that can use the EF-S mount are:

To restate what's already been said:

EF lenses fit all Canon SLRs (well, since 1987)
EF-S lenses fit only crop-frame Canon SLRs (list in previous post).

As far as I know, the only APS-C Canon digital SLR's that cannot accept the EF-S lenses are the first three models, the Canon EOS D30 (the 3-megapixel one they launched their d-slr business with),the VERY short-lived EOS D60, and the EOS 10D.
