how essential are lens filters for an everyday photographer? i was looking at a polarizing lens for $30! What are the differences with a regular UV protecting filter vs. a polarizing filter? Thanks!

A polarizing filter has many benefits and even a few disadvantages. UV filters are mostly used for protecting the lens from falls or other damage.
