Lens Help Advice Please :-/

I have a canon xsi and a Nikon d50. But I'm looking in to purchasing a 50mm ef 1.8 lens for my canon soon. Just for the fact that it's just one of those "must have lenses". Well. I'll me shooting some random candids at a sweet 16 bday party, and wanted to know if the 50mm will be a good lens to work with.? I also have the standard 18-55 on my canon and my Nikon I have a 28-80 and 70-300. Just wondering if the 50mm ef 1.8 will work well also for those candid photos? Thank you for your time.

It will depend on the lens aperture you use. The inexpensive, low build quality Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 delivers it's sharpest focus when the lens is stopped down 2 stops or more.

Unless you have changed the setting, your XSi adjusts lens aperture in 1/3 stop steps, so 6 steps of smaller lens aperture, from f/1.8 to f/3.5, is 2 stops.
