Photos NOT OK to edit
I just left the store with my new D7000 and I have a few dollars to spend. Im ready to take some pics!!! What lens should I buy to get started?? Any Suggestions??? Thanks in Advance!!!!!

Did you already get the zoom kit lens with it and want to add to the collection?

Define "a few dollars to spend"...

Sent from Erics iPhone! (2) Nikon D300 50mm 1.4, 17-55 2.8, 70-200 2.8VRII, 24-70 2.8, 85mm 1.4, (2) SB900

In addition to what lens(es) you have currently an idea of:

1) What a "few dollars" is in real cash is important - we need to know if we are talking 10s; 100s; 1000s etc...

2) What kind of photos you want to be able to take - what subjects or situations you are hoping to work with/in.

I have about $2000 to spend. I want to do some sporting events, parties and some portrait type photos to begin with.

Nikon 80-200mm 2.8, Nikon 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8, 1.4, Tamron 17-50mm or 28-75mm 2.8 lens. Try to find used one to save a few hundreds. GL.

Two outta three ain't bad. Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8.
For parties, get a kit lens and a flash.

Agreed, 70-200 is a great lense for what it sounds like you want to shoot. Doesn't your camera have the aps-c sensor? If so that 70-200 will be more like a 105-300, which will put your subject very far away, especially for portraits. Also think about the 24-70, it's awesome! If you want both go with sigma, it'll make for a more complete starter set, and you can always upgrade later.

Here's what I suggest:

Fast prime: 35mm f1.8 af-s ($185 used)
Short zoom: tamron 17-50mm f2.8 ($325 used), or sigma 24-70mm f2.8 ($375 used)
Long zoom: nikon 80-200mm f2.8 af-d "two ring" ($675 used) or af-s version for $900 used
Flash: sb-600 ($175 used)

With the d700 you can also use non-CPU manual focus glass, good choices would be:

50mm f1.4 ais ($150 used)
105mm f2.8 micro ais ($190 used)
300mm f4.5 if ais Ed ($325 used)
600mm f5.6 ais Ed ($1500 used)
