I was contemplating buying a UV and/or polarized lens for my 55-300mm (and stock 18-55) lens on my new d5100 to protect the lens and maybe spiff up some of my nature/landscape shots, but a friend suggested a lens hood might be easier -- since I could leave it on for almost all shooting environments.

The Nikon OEM lens hood gets terrible reviews online. I know from research that I should stick w/the same shape as recommended by Nikon (not tulip) so it might end up being an off-brand purchase.

Any thoughts from those more experienced? I welcome input on UV & polarized filters and finding the right lens hood.

You will not find a good answer for your filter question... you'll get the same answers if you ask "Mac or PC.. which is better".

I shoot at high altitudes all the time (~9000ft) and I've taken pictures with and without a UV filter. I really couldn't tell a difference. A polarized filter will help if your shooting through glass or into water, how often do you do that will depend on if you need one.

Personally, I use lens hoods all the time (even indoors).. and i don't use filters to protect the lens. The exception is when i'm in a sandy/dusty/windy environment (like some areas in Southern Utah).

As to what lens hood to get for the 55-300mm.. I would just get Nikon's.
