Hello all!

So I've been using my EF-S 55-250mm IS but I'm starting to desire a liiiiiiiiittle bit more reach and maybe a little bit better quality.

So far I've seen:

1. Canon 100-400mm IS L
2. Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM
3. Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM IS
4. Canon 70-200mm f/4 L

I'd probably get a 1.4X teleconverter for option 3 or 4.

Thoughts? Opinions? Other options?

a 1.4x tele will eat a stop of light. If you're considering a tele then you may want to consider saving a bit more for the 70-200 f/2.8

I love my Sigma 100-300mm EX f/4 -- got it for about $500 on e-bay

It is sharp, works well with 1.4X TC, great color, and focuses fast

Sigma 100-300mm f/4.0 EX IF HSM APO Reviews

Roadrunner is without TC
Hummer is with Sigma EX 1.4X TC at 420mm

The 100-400 Canon slide zoom is pretty popular and versatile. I have a Sigma 80-400 OS that's been on full-time loan to my buddy Steve for three years. He shoots a lot of minor league baseball with the Sigma in the summer months, and really likes it, compared to his Canon 70-300 IS lens. The Sigma is sharper than that "old" IS Canon (which Canon has replaced with a new 75-300 IS as I understand it),and has more reach, topping out a 400mm.

Would 300mm be long enough for you? it just seems like the 100-400 or 80-400 lenses would be really nice for planes in flight, coming in for landing, taking off, at airshows, etc.

I browsed your Flickr pages--sure like that crosswalk photo abstract!

You might consider the Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM if the 150mm on the low end isn't too much for you. It has the Optical Stabilizer technology that's supposed to allow 4 stops slower exposure. I just ordered one yesterday from photo4less.com.

I was just about to post about this same lens. So I'll just put a nice +1
