Light meter?

Hello,
I had a question regarding light meter and battery in a Vivitar V3800N camera.
Is the light meter something that I need? I believe the shutter on the camera doesn't require any battery and read that the battery is simply for the light meter.
I am a noob.

Yes you'll need it. 2 x AG13/LR44s I assume (1.5v batteries.)

Unless you have and know how to use a handheld meter, you'll be guessing at exposure--great if your film and processing are free. Otherwise...
